Artist's Description

Suburban Follies : Structures for the Residential Landscape

Originally commissioned as self-assembly garden structures, this collection of drawing studies included a viewing tower, a shower enclosure and a pavilion.

The tower was designed as an articulating structure with fold down platforms suggesting states of repose and movement, i.e standing, leaning, sitting or jumping. The shower enclosure was designed with a garden water storage tank shower filled from a garden hose. The pavilion incorporated a discrete curtains for privacy and intimacy.

The inversion of urban/suburban imagery was the conceptual backbone for the project e.g. shower/watertank, viewing tower/skyscraper, pavilion/ rear window.

The drawings were presented in the Suburban Follies exhibition, at Gallery North in Setauket, New York.

The original drawings are 18" x 24" on drawing paper

Inclusion was based on a commonality of inherent spatial concepts and drawing technique. Watercolor, acrylic and crayon are the primary media, the additive and reductive techniques they embody, enable works that are multi-layered, translucent and transparent in visual depth. Architectural notions of placement, juxtaposition, figure/ground relationships and implied form...
